CEU Course Description
HIV research has progressed significantly in the last 45 years, but this virus continues to be a significant global health issue. HIV transmission continues worldwide, and nurses continue to encounter patients diagnosed with HIV in every setting. They also encounter patients who may carry the virus, but do not realize they are infected. Nurses must be prepared to care for patients with HIV by understanding what HIV is, how it is and is not spread, what the associated risk factors are, best practices related to screening, diagnosis, and treatment, how to support patients, and how to prevent HIV transmission in the healthcare setting.

CEU Course Objectives

  2. Describe the signs and symptoms of HIV
  3. Identify risk factors associated with HIV
  4. Apply knowledge of screening, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring methods to clinical practice
  5. Support rationale for patient support interventions
  6. Prioritize interventions that reduce the risk of HIV transmission in the healthcare setting
