CEU Course Description

Aortic dissection is a condition associated with high patient mortality. Nurses and members of the healthcare team who can quickly identify aortic dissection and intervene appropriately improve patient outcomes. For this to happen, nurses must be knowledgeable about the structure and function of the aorta, understand what happens when an aortic dissection occurs, be knowledgeable regarding factors that increase risk for aortic dissection, be able to recognize typical and atypical signs and symptoms, be familiar with evidence-based diagnostic tools, and prioritize nursing interventions, including initiating an emergency response.

  2. Identify factors that increase the risk of aortic dissection
  3. Recognize typical and atypical signs and symptoms of aortic dissection
  4. Understand diagnostic tools used in clinical decision-making for aortic dissection
  5. Prioritize nursing interventions and appropriate emergency actions
