CEU Course Description

Shoulder dystocia is an obstetrical emergency that is occurring at an increasing rate in the United States. It is usually unpredictable and unavoidable, so nurses must be prepared to intervene when shoulder dystocia is suspected. Nurses must understand what shoulder dystocia is, identify the risk factors and causes, recognize the signs of its occurrence, understand how to respond with evidence-based interventions, and be knowledgeable of the health implications related to shoulder dystocia. 

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Define shoulder dystocia
  2. Identify the risk factors and causes related to shoulder dystocia
  3. Recognize clinical signs that alert the care team that shoulder dystocia has occurred 
  4. Understand evidence-based interventions and how the nurse can assist in promoting a positive outcome
  5. Review the health implications for the mother and neonate related to shoulder dystocia
