CE Course Description

Mindfulness has origins in early Eastern traditions, including Hinduism and Buddhism. While it has been practiced in Eastern religions and cultures for thousands of years, it was introduced to the Western World by Thich Nhat Hanh around the 1960s. Since the 1970s, there have been two primary approaches to mindfulness: one from Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues and the other from Ellen Langer and colleagues. Also, since this time, mindfulness research has grown significantly, primarily showing its ability to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Since mindfulness has been shown to be an evidence-based intervention for various aspects of health, it is essential that mental health professionals are equipped with the knowledge they need to teach clients mindfulness in healthcare settings. This course will define mindfulness and examine it from theoretical and practical perspectives, helping mental health professionals translate mindfulness practices into tools patients can use to regulate their nervous systems and experience the benefits of meditation and breathing exercises.
