CEU Course Description

E-cigarettes were introduced in the United States only two decades ago; however, they have since become the most commonly used source of nicotine across all populations. Many people, including nurses, are unaware of the adverse effects e-cigarette use can have on mental health. As e-cigarette use continues to rise, it is increasingly important for nurses to understand how nicotine affects the brain and contributes to addiction. Nurses should also be able to recognize the impact of nicotine on mental health, identify populations at increased risk for e-cigarette use and related mental health complications, apply evidence-based screening and cessation interventions, and provide patient education that supports successful cessation and improved health outcomes. 

CEU Course Objectives

1. Review the anatomy of the brain and how it is affected by nicotine
2. Recognize the effects of nicotine on mental health 
3. Identify individuals who are at risk for using e-cigarettes and who are at risk for adverse mental health effects from the use of e-cigarettes
4. Review evidence-based screening tools and cessation interventions to promote positive outcomes
5. Outline patient education strategies to promote e-cigarette use prevention and effective cessation
