CEU Course Description
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a vastly complex condition that has many causes, risk factors, and implications for the patient’s health. With 35.5 million adults in the United States living with CKD, it is important that nurses are knowledgeable about this disease and can provide evidence-based care to improve outcomes. To understand the effects of CKD, nurses must first review the anatomy and physiology of the normal kidney. They should understand the early signs and symptoms of CKD, how the disease is staged, and which factors increase the risk of CKD and its progression. Nurses must also understand the cardiovascular implications of CKD. Nurses who are knowledgeable about interpreting renal function lab results and the interventions used to manage CKD and prevent progression can positively affect patient outcomes. Through effective nursing interventions and patient education strategies, nurses can help slow the progression of CKD and optimize patient outcomes.
