CEU Course Description 

'Practical Approaches to End-of-life Care' is designed for healthcare professionals, including nurses, nursing home administrators, and assisted living administrators. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted end-of-life process for elderly individuals, encompassing their medical, physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs. Through practical approaches, participants will learn to navigate the complexities of end-of-life care, focusing on effective communication, holistic symptom management, and the crucial role of support systems. The course emphasizes the impact healthcare professionals have on patients, families, and colleagues during this deeply personal journey, equipping learners with the knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, dignified, and patient-centered care.

CEU Course Objectives 

  1. Differentiate and describe the medical, physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual aspects commonly experienced by elderly individuals in the end-of-life process, enabling a holistic understanding of patient needs.
  2. Apply practical communication strategies and interdisciplinary approaches to facilitate effective dialogue with patients, families, and care teams regarding prognosis, advanced care planning, and comfort measures.
  3. Implement evidence-based interventions for comprehensive symptom management, recognizing common physical changes and altered states of consciousness at the end of life, to enhance patient comfort and dignity.
  4. Identify and effectively utilize available care and support systems, including palliative care, hospice care, and advance care planning, to ensure patient wishes are honored and families receive appropriate assistance.
  5. Provide compassionate and competent care during the final hours of life and in the immediate post-mortem period, understanding legal requirements, family needs, and the importance of grief support.
