CEU Course Description

Substance Use Disorder is a global problem and affects over 17% of the US population over age 12. With such widespread prevalence, nurses will encounter individuals experiencing substance use disorder in many healthcare settings. Over the last few decades, research has provided valuable findings that change how nurses and other healthcare professionals think about and care for individuals with substance use disorders. Upon completion of this course, learners will understand what substance use disorder is, be able to identify terminology related to substance use disorder that is both clinically accurate and person-centered, and review the science of addiction. Learners will also be able to describe different types of substance use disorders, identify risk factors and protective factors, outline evidence-based treatment modalities and prevention methods, and review nursing interventions to improve outcomes.
