Course Description
This brief handbook contains an overview of ethics in the helping professions and the ethical codes from various associations. Covered in the handbook are: American Counseling Association Code of Ethics (2005); Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (2002); National Board for Certified Counselors Code of Ethics (2005); American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Code of Ethics (2001); Ethical Standards for School Counselors (2004); Code of Ethics of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) (2000); and the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers (1999).
Course Objectives
1. Describe the role of ethics and morality in the helping professions, including strengths and limitations of ethical codes, principles involved in making ethical decisions, and examples of unethical behavior.
2. Summarize the key components of the ethical codes for the American Counseling Association (ACA), the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).
3. Define the obligations that professionals in the field of psychology are under in conducting themselves in a variety of situations, as required by the American Psychological Association (APA) Code of Conduct.
4. Outline school counselors' ethical obligations to the groups with whom they work, including students, parents/guardians, colleagues, the school and community, as well as the profession.
5. Evaluate specific ideals present within the ethical codes of various helping professions, such as the responsibility to clients, confidentiality, integrity, professional responsibility, and research and publication issues.
