The course gives students and professionals a more in-depth understanding of co-occurring substance use and mental disorders including how common they are, the multiple problems they create, and the impact they have on treatment and treatment outcome. Course Objectives

1. Identify terms related to substance use disorders, mental disorders, clients, treatment, programs, and systems.

2. Examine ways to improve substance abuse treatment systems and programs and to determine appropriate assessment practices.

3. Explore strategies for working with clients with co-occurring disorders in various settings.

4. Recognize the characteristics of specific mental disorders including prevalence, symptoms, and issues and concerns, particularly when combined with a substance abuse disorder.

5. Exhibit an understanding of appropriate medications used for for various mental disorders and substance induced disorders.
