This course was developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of US Department of Health and Human Services. The course gives students and professionals a more in-depth understanding ofco-occurring substance use and mental disordersincluding how common they are, the multiple problems they create, and the impact they have on treatment and treatment outcome. The material includes valuable appendices which provide practical guidance forcounselors and therapistsand give an excellent overview of various medications including samples of screening and assessment instruments.
Course Objectives
1. Identify terms related tosubstance use disorders, mental disorders, clients, treatment, programs, and systems.
2. Examine ways to improve substance abuse treatment systems and programs and to determine appropriate assessment practices.
3. Explore strategies for working withclients with co-occurring disordersin various settings.
4. Recognize the characteristics ofspecific mental disorders including prevalence, symptoms, and issues and concerns, particularly when combined with a substance abuse disorder.
5. Exhibit an understanding ofappropriate medications used for for various mental disorders and substance induced disorders.
