CE Course Description
Chapters were extracted from the Clinical Practice Guideline 'Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: Update 2008' published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service Department in order to develop a shorter course on the assessment and treatment of tobacco use and dependence for clinicians working with this population.
CE Course Objectives
1. Evaluate the importance of screening for tobacco use in health care settings as a means to identify users and increase rates of clinical intervention.
2. Identify specific strategies that may be used to assist professionals in providing brief interventions for tobacco use cessation, including the 5 A's model for treating tobacco use and dependence.
3. Describe the clinical guidelines for prescribing medication for tobacco dependence including precautions, dosage information, availability, and prescribing instructions of various medications.
4. Discuss ways to promote motivation for smoking cessation and to support those who have recently quit, as well as methods to provide intensive interventions for tobacco dependence when appropriate.
5. Assess the value of systems-level interventions that involve clinicians, administrators, insurers, employers, and health care organizations in the delivery of tobacco dependence treatment.
