This course is based on the updated research guide by NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) and is intended to describe the treatment principles and research findings that have particular relevance to the criminal justice community and to treatment professionals working with drug abusing offenders.

CE Course Objectives

1. Identify the relationship between substance abuse and criminal activity, including characteristics of offenders who use illicit drugs and alcohol.

2. Describe substance abuse treatment principles and research findings that have particular relevance to the criminal justice community.

3. List frequently asked questions relevant to drug abuse and offender populations, including those pertaining to women, juveniles, and offenders with co-occurring mental health issues.

4. Discuss the connection between addressing the treatment needs of substance abusing offenders and reducing overall crime and other drug-related societal burdens.
