CEU Course Description

This course provides basic information on sources and impacts of trauma and describes how behavioral health, human services, and other systems are becoming “trauma-informed.”  This course also focuses on how people come to recognize the impact of trauma on themselves and others, and become aware of the ways in which women might have been affected by trauma, whether or not they talk about it.  In addition, this course presents information on the fundamentals of peer support that have been developed over the years by people who have worked in peer support roles, conducted research on the topic, and have reflected upon and written about it.  Finally, an overview of how gender role socialization contributes to violence and trauma, how social norms and institutions affect women survivors, and how gender may affect peer support relationships is discussed.

Course Objectives

1. Define trauma, and discuss its impact, sources, signs, and symptoms.

2. Differentiate between trauma-specific services and trauma-informed practices.

3. Discuss how peer supporters enable survivors to define their trauma experiences in their own terms in order to heal.

4. Review the fundamentals and principles of peer support.

5. Identify specific settings where peer support takes place.
