CEU Course Description

Therapeutic communities are a common form of long-term residential treatment for substance use disorders.  This CEU course discusses the therapeutic community approach, the effectiveness of therapeutic communities, fundamental components, methods of providing treatment, treating populations with special needs, and integration of therapeutic communities into the criminal justice system.

CEU Course Objectives

1. Describe various characteristics of therapeutic communities, including their approach to treatment, populations served, and how they have evolved over time.

2. Identify ways in which therapeutic community (TC) theory applies to individuals with substance use disorders during recovery and rehabilitation.

3. Discuss how populations with special needs are served in therapeutic communities.

4. Evaluate the use of the TC model in the criminal justice system, including results of research in this area.

5. Summarize strategies to adapt TCs to prevailing substance use and treatment trends and to current directions in health care.
