CEU Course Description

Research presented by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) indicates that millions of Americans across the country have stimulant use disorders. Further research suggests that the prevalence of stimulant use disorders is increasing. Thus, health care professionals should possess insight into stimulant use disorder, and available therapeutic options to best serve patients in need. This course reviews SAMHSA's treatment improvement protocol (TIP), Treatment for Stimulant Use Disorders, which provides insight into stimulant use disorder and reviews strategies to effectively identify, treat, and help patients recover from a stimulant use disorder.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Recognize concepts central to stimulant use disorder care.
  2. Examine the ways in which brain structures, functions, and neurochemistry are altered in the presence of stimulants, while reviewing the role of these alterations in the development and persistence of a stimulant use disorder.
  3. Identify the medical and psychological signs, symptoms, and complications associated with stimulant use and stimulant use disorders and how to best manage common complications.
  4. Recall nonpharmacologic approaches that may be used to help patients begin and sustain recovery from stimulant use disorders.
  5. Evaluate techniques health care professionals can use to help engage patients in SUD treatment and maximize their chances of sustaining long-term recovery, while obtaining insight into treatment considerations for special populations and available resources.
