CEU Course Description

This course was developed from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Quick Guide, which provides information about suicidality; focuses on the information that treatment professionals need to know and provides that information in an accessible manner; synthesizes knowledge and grounds it in the practical realities of clinical cases and real situations so that the reader will come away with increased knowledge, encouragement, and resourcefulness in working with substance abuse treatment clients who have suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

CEU Course Objectives

1.  Examine the rate of dying by suicide for individuals treated for alcohol abuse or dependence compared with the general population.

2.  Review the skills of a good counselor and counseling team.

3.  Describe the 10 points to remember about suicidality.

4.  Become familiar with the warning signs and risk factors of a person who may attempt suicide.

5.  Enumerate the information that should be included on safety cards and safety plans for those at risk of suicide.
