CEU Course Description

This course focuses on: the importance of breastfeeding; finding support and information for the mother; how breast milk is made; what the mother needs to know before giving birth; learning to breastfeed; common challenges and questions with breastfeeding; what to know when breastfeeding a baby with health problems, during special situations, and in public; pumping and milk storage; going back to work while breastfeeding; and nutrition, fitness, and stress.

CEU Course Objectives

1.  Discuss why colostrum is so vital to the immediate and long-term health of the infant.

2.  Examine the differences between breast milk and formula and why breast milk is best for the mother and the baby.

3.  Explain how breast milk is made, including the tissues involved, the hormones responsible, and the baby’s role in helping milk production.

4.  Identify how often the mother should breastfeed the baby to continue to produce enough milk and to ensure that the baby is eating enough to have proper health and weight gain.

5.  Elucidate the importance of the baby finishing the first breast before switching to the second and explain what this “hind” milk is a rich source of.

6.  Investigate what should be done for common problems such as plugged ducts, sore nipples, and jaundice.
