This course describes the screening and assessment process for trauma as it pertains to: barriers and challenges; timing; the environment; misdiagnosis and under-diagnosis; cross cultural screening and assessment; choosing instruments for the purpose, population, and quality of trauma screening and assessment; and trauma informed screening and assessment.

Course Objectives

1. Identify the purpose of trauma-informed screening and assessment as well as barriers and challenges.

2. Discuss strategies to create an effective screening and assessment environment in order to enhance the success of treatment.

3. Describe how behavioral health service providers approach screening and assessment processes with the influences of culture, ethnicity, and race firmly in mind.

4. Summarize general considerations for selecting standardized instruments, and differentiate between various screening tools.
