This course was developed using the Technical Assistance Publication, Competencies for Substance Abuse Treatment Clinical Supervisors, from the US Department of Health and Human Services. The purpose is to present a competency based model to provide a framework for understanding, learning, and implementing the multiple functions and tasks of clinical supervisors. While specific to Supervisors of Counselors that work in a Substance Abuse Treatment setting, this course introduces a competency-based model of supervision that would be applicable to all clinical supervisors in any field.
Course Objectives:
1. The participant will become familiar with the foundation area competencies of supervision including theories, roles, and modalities of clinical supervision, leadership, supervisory alliance, critical thinking, and organizational management and administration.
2. The participant will be able to demonstrate knowledge of performance domains in order to identify the supervisor's specific responsibilities and abilities essential to protecting client welfare and improving clinical services.
3. The participant will be able to evaluate a supervisor's role in developing a competent staff and fulfilling an organization’s mission and goals.
4. The participant will be able to describe the set of guidelines needed to support the development of an implementation plan to ensure a smooth transition from existing practice to a different way of supervising clinical staff.
