CE Course Description
These chapters were extracted from the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: 2008 Update. The Clinical Guidelines were published by the Department of Health and Human Service, Department of Public Health Service and focus on Tobacco Use in Special Populations and recommend effective treatments for specific populations.
CE Course Objectives
1. Discuss specific concerns and clinical issues facing special populations such as HIV-positive smokers, hospitalized smokers, those with low socioeconomic status, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender smokers, older smokers, women, and others.
2. Summarize research findings on the effectiveness of tobacco dependence interventions in special populations and identify areas where further research is needed.
3. Evaluate the need to develop person-to-person psychosocial interventions for pregnant smokers while describing specialized strategies used to assist this population.
4, Describe the use of tobacco cessation medication and other tobacco dependence treatments for special populations.
