Brief Strategic Family Therapy for Adolescent Drug Abuse

Course Description

This course was developed from the US Department of Health and Human Services National Institute on Drug Abuse publication which outlines Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT), a brief intervention used to treat adolescent drug use that occurs with other problem behaviors. BSFT is a family systems approach in which the counselor identifies the patterns of family interaction that are associated with the adolescent’s behavior problems. This course introduces professionals to concepts that are needed to understand the family as a vital context within which adolescent drug abuse occurs, and BSFT techniques discussed here will show how to engage and retain families in drug abuse treatment and ultimately cause them to behave more effectively.

Course Objectives

1. Review strategies for creating a therapeutic relationship with families, assessing and diagnosing maladaptive patterns of family interaction, and changing patterns of family interaction from maladaptive to adaptive.

2. Exhibit an understanding of the basic theoretical concepts of BSFT including context, systems, structure, strategy, and content versus process.

3. Recognize methods for diagnosing family system problems and orchestrating change for drug abusing adolescents and their family members.

4. Understand ways to engage the family into treatment, including overcoming resistance.
