CEU Course Description

This course identifies cultural knowledge and its relationship to treatment as a domain that requires proficiency in clinical skills, programmatic development, and administrative practices.  It focuses on patterns of substance use and co-occurring disorders (CODs), beliefs about traditions involving substance use, beliefs and attitudes about behavioral health treatment, assessment and treatment considerations and theoretical approaches and treatment interventions across the major racial and ethnic groups in the United States.  In addition to providing epidemiological data on each group, this course discusses salient aspects of treatment for each racial/ethnic group.

CEU Course Objectives

1.  Discuss the reason behind the research, that of all major racial/ethnic groups in the United States, Asian Americans have the lowest rates of alcohol use disorders.

2.  Explain how node-link mapping plays a part in treatment and for which ethnic groups it works best for.

3.  Investigate who African Americans are most likely to be referred to treatment by and how this plays a role in entering treatment.

4.  Compare and contrast African Americans to other racial/ethnic groups who inject heroin and how this impacts their long-term health.

5.  Examine treatment issues, considerations, methods, and approaches for each of the racial/ethnic groups.

6.  Elucidate the optimal approach for trauma histories and PTSD among Native Americans in substance abuse treatment.

7.  Identify which disorders African Americans are more likely than White Americans to receive treatment for.

8.  Describe the most serious substance use problem in the Latino community.
