CE Course Description

Youth in alternative school settings may be at particularly high risk for teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and associated sexual risk behaviors.  This CE course examines the strategies for delivering adolescent pregnancy prevention services to a high-risk youth population.

2.  Reaching High-Risk Youth With Teen Choice

a.  Inwood House originally planned to provide Teen Choice to youth in foster care; this plan proved to be challenging

b.  Inwood House expanded the target population to include a broader set of at-risk youth in alternative school settings

c.  Teen Choice is a flexible curriculum designed to be delivered by trained facilitators who adapt content to the needs of participating youth

3.  Characteristics Of Youth In The Teen Choice Study

a.  The youth served by Teen Choice reflected the characteristics of the student populations in the study school

b.  Many youth in the study come from unstable home environments

c.  Students enrolled in Teen Choice reported high rates of school-related behavior problems and sexual risk behaviors

d.  Students had limited access to abstinence and contraceptive education and reproductive health services

4.  The Plan For Implementation

a.  Inwood House faced multiple challenges in planning for program implementation

b.  Recruitment procedures were tailored to the specific circumstances of study schools; even so, recruitment proved challenging

c.  Facilitators planned to implement Teen Choice on varying schedules

5.  Providing Support For Implementation

a.  Despite a planned merger, Inwood House staff collaborated internally and externally to ensure smooth program delivery

b.  Facilitators received training and technical assistance before and throughout Teen Choice implementation

c.  Inwood House provided facilitators with adequate support and resources that improved over time

6.  Adhering To The Implementation Plan And Engaging Youth

a.  Despite sustained efforts to address it, poor attendance at Teen Choice sessions remained an implementation challenge throughout the study period

b.  Youth enrolled in Teen Choice attended 53 percent of sessions offered, on average

c.  Teen Choice facilitators modified lessions as needed

d.  The small group approach to delivering Teen Choice content created a comfortable and engaging environment
