CEU Course Description

Extracted from a guide created by the National Center on Trauma-Informed Care as a technical assistance document to help make trauma-informed peer support available to women who receive or have received services in behavioral health or other human service systems. 

This course provides information, tools, and resources to help address the issues of religion and spirituality in peer support contexts.  In this course, “religion” refers to an organized faith tradition with accepted theology, practices, and structure, while “spirituality” refers to an individual’s sense of connection with the wholeness of the universe.

Course Objectives

1.  Differentiate between religion and spirituality, while addressing issues of sensitivity related to religion.

2.  Identify the relationship between religion, spirituality, and trauma healing practices.

3.  Discuss how peer support facilitators can create a safe environment for trauma survivors to embrace their spirituality.

4.  Describe various spiritual tools, practices, and resources, as well as methods to connect to these supports.
