CEU Course Description

This course provides an overview of the incidence of suicide in the elderly population, what precipitating factors are often overlooked and what the role of the psychotherapist can be to prevent the frequency of these suicides. There is also an overview of a patient's "right to die" which is becoming of more concern as the population ages.

CEU Course Objectives

1. Learn which segments of the aging population are most likely to attempt suicide and why they succeed.

2.  Understand which critical assessment criteria are often missed when the elderly are being evaluated for suicidal potential and how to address these in one's practice.

3.  Learn how to get the most critical information from an elderly client in order to diagnose/assess them appropriately.

4.  Learn techniques needed in order to engage an older patient in the therapy process.

5.  Gain a general understanding of the difference between a suicidal patient and one who is seeking an assisted death and what this might mean to the clinician.
