Course Description This report was written by a working party of clinical psychologists who were chosen because of their particular expertise on the subject of bipolar disorder. The purpose of the report is to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge about why some people tend to experience periods of extreme mood, and what can help – in traditional medical language, the ‘causes and treatment of bipolar disorder’.
Course Objectives
1. Describe the experiences of a person with bipolar disorder, such as developmental impact, social, psychological, and biological factors, and the course of the illness over a person's life.
2. Discuss help available and treatment options for bipolar illness including assessment strategies, self-management techniques, psychological therapies, and medication.
3. Identify the various interpretations of recovery from bipolar disorder and methods used to assist in the journey of recovery.
4. Examine how mental health service providers can change their existing practices of focusing on bipolar disorder as an illness to be treated by medication, but rather as a human experience with emphasis placed on the individual.
