Research consistently shows a high prevalence of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts among persons with substance abuse problems who are in treatment, and a significant prevalence of death-by-suicide among those who have at one time been in treatment when compared with those who do not have a diagnosis of substance use disorder.
This course was developed using the Treatment Improvement Protocol publication, Addressing Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors in Substance Abuse Treatment to give clinicians a practical guide to gather information routinely from, refer, and participate in the treatment of clients at risk for suicidal behavior. It also provides several vignettes of counseling sessions with these clients and is appropriate for front line counselors in a substance abuse treatment program, for those who work with individuals who have both a substance abuse and mental health disorder, for counselors addressing any clients with suicidal ideation or behavior, and for any individuals who want to gain more insight into this important subject matter.
Course Objectives
1. Describe the connection between suicide and substance abuse disorders including risk factors and warning signs, and identify strategies for addressing sociality, along with points to keep the clinician on track and positive attitudes and behaviors that will help the professional provide services to clients who are suicidal.
2. Demonstrate and understanding of GATE, the four step process of working with suicidal clients which includes gathering information, accessing supervision, taking responsible action and extending that action.
3. Identify “how-to” descriptions of specific counseling techniques used to understand the client, his or her issues related to suicide, and specific approaches as demonstrated in the vignettes of counseling sessions with suicidal clients.
4. Determine how administrators can provide support for programs and counselors as they address clients’ suicidal thoughts and behaviors and make treatment programs more suicide capable.
5. Recognize the different levels of program involvement in addressing the needs of substance abuse clients with suicidal thoughts and behaviors and the legal and ethical issues for consideration in managing and providing treatment to these clients.
