This course summarizes information regarding the prevalence of alcohol abuse among HIV-infected people as well as current knowledge regarding the separate and combined effects of HIV infection and alcohol use on the brain and the immune system.
CE Course Objectives
1. Recognize ways in which chronic alcohol abuse may exacerbate metabolic injury in the brains of HIV-infected people.
2. Discuss the prevalence of chronic alcohol use among the HIV-infected population and biological and immunological effects of HIV infection and chronic alcohol use.
3. Identify effects of HIV infection and alcohol abuse on the central nervous system (CNS).
4. Differentiate between alcohol-abusing HIV infected patients and those who do not abuse alcohol on a variety of CNS measures.
