The information for this course was compiled by the Department of Health and Human Services and gives a brief overview of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and how it affects adults and children. Symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options are briefly discussed as well as important information about ADHD and school functioning, tips for parents, and specific considerations for teenagers and adults with ADHD. ADHD is the most commonly studied and diagnosed psychiatric disorder in children, so this course is appropriate for anyone in the medical, mental health, education, or social work field who may come into contact with these children or with teens and adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Course Objectives
1. Describe the symptoms of ADHD and be able to differentiate between the predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type, predominantly inattentive type , and combined hyperactive-impulsive and innatentive type of ADHD.
2. Exhibit an understanding of various diagnostic and treatment approaches to help those with ADHD, including the use of appropriate medications.
3. Explore the possible causes of ADHD including genetics, environmental agents, brain injury, and others, and examine simple behavioral interventions to assist the child and the parents with everyday functioning.
4. Review the unique characteristics of ADHD as it affects teenagers and adults.
