Course Description
This course gives a brief overview of how psychotherapeutic medications are used to improve treatment and to provide increased understanding of the causes of mental illness. Medications covered include antipsychotic, antimanic, anticonvulsant, antianxiety, and antidepressants. Medication needs for special populations are also included as well as an index that lists the generic and trade names for various psychotherapeutic medications.
Course Objectives
1. Identify the various psychiatric medications used to treat mental illness, including antipsychotics, antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anticonvulsants, beta-blockers, anti-anxiety medications.
2. Describe the factors that affect how medications work to treat the symptoms of mental disorders, as well as side effects and dosing recommendations.
3. Evaluate the special needs of children and adolescents, older adults, and pregnant women taking psychiatric medications and review FDA warnings and approvals.
4. Recognize the generic and trade names for medications prescribed to assist people with mental disorders.
