This course was developed using information from the Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health, and gives a broad overview of mental illness. The report covers the neuroscience of mental health, symptoms, psychological and psychosocial influences, and prevention and treatment of various mental health disorders. This would be an excellent course for anyone looking for an introduction or review of the basic principles of mental illness.
Course Objectives
1. Review the neuropsychology of the brain including the chemical and anatomical structure and functions of the brain.
2. Exhibit and understanding of the features of the disease process of mental illness and the characteristics of these disorders.
3. Evaluate the patterns of mental health disorders amongst various populations and the biopsychosocial and psychosocial models of disease.
4. Recognize the various developmental theories and risk factors associated with mental illness, prevention and treatment strategies, and the issues that affect racial and ethnic minority populations in the mental health system.
