TIP 44. This is an excellent course that focuses on examining substance abuse disorders amongcriminal offenders. The course material is taken from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration publication in the Treatment Improvement Protocol Series, and it provides recommendations to counselors and administrators based on the research literature and the experience of seasoned treatment professionals. It covers the various criminal justice settings and all the phases through which an individual progresses in the criminal justice system and addresses both clinical and programmatic areas of treatment. It would be appropriate for anyone who works with substance abusing criminal offenders or their loved ones, or for those who are interested in learning more about these issues.
Course Objectives
1. Evaluate screening and assessment measures that are used to determine which offenders need substance abuse treatment, to assess the extent of their treatment needs, and to ensure that they receive the treatment they need.
2. Examine treatment planning and implementation for substance abusing criminal offenders, including methods to adapt treatment strategies to their unique needs and circumstances.
3. Identify treatment issues specific to pretrial and diversion settings, to jails and prisons, and to offenders under community supervision.
4. Determine ways in which criminal justice and substance abuse treatment systems can be integrated so that the effective collaboration between the two systems can result in better treatment for offenders and, ultimately, a reduction in crime.
5. Examine effective strategies to evaluate treatment practices to ensure appropriate program monitoring and decision making as well as to identify strengths and weaknesses, and provide a basis for program revision.
