CEU Course Description

This course provides information about new developments in the rapidly growing field of co-occurring substance use and mental disorders; focuses on what the substance abuse treatment clinician needs to know and provides that information in an accessible manner; and synthesizes knowledge and grounds it in the practical realities of clinical cases and real situations so the reader will come away with increased knowledge, encouragement, and resourcefulness in working with clients with co-occurring disorders.

CEU Course Description

1. Describe the various levels of service, program types, and quadrants of care for individuals with co­-occurring substance use and mental disorders.

2. Identify the elements of sucessful programming for clients with COD.

3. Differentiate between outpatient substance abuse treatment programs for clients with COD, residential treatment programs, and dual recovery mutual self-help programs.

4. Summarize characteristics and treatment considerations for specific COD populations including the homeless, those in criminal justice settings, and women.

5. Outline strategies for assessing an agency’s potential to serve clients with COD.
