Course Description
Sexually transmitted diseases - STDs - refer to the more than 25 infectious organisms transmitted primarily through sexual activity. STDs are among many related factors that affect the broad continuum of reproductive health - which is the focus of this paper.
Course Objectives
1. Identify biological factors, social and behavioral issues, and gender, racial, and ethic disparities that contribute to the serious health consequences of sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) in the United States.
2. Differentiate between bacterial and viral STD illnesses and disabilities, and describe how complications may affect females, males, fetuses, and newborns.
3. Evaluate personal behaviors and community strategies that assist in promoting responsible sexual behaviors.
4. Recognize methods to positively impact populations who are at high risk for STD's, particularly adolescents, who experience a disproportionate share of sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies.
