Medical Assessment and Treatment for HIV

This option applies to the majority of our participants.

This option 'only' applies to those participants who will be submitting their certificates directly to NBCC (National Board of Certified Counselors) for license renewal. All others will use Standard CEU Hours.

Course Description

The information for this course was taken from a Department of Health and Human Services publication, and it outlines the steps for providing effective medical assessment and treatment for HIV-infected substance-abusing clients. Included is a brief overview of adherence issues, standards of care and barriers to this care, pharmacologic aspects, and health issues that affect HIV/AIDS and substance abusing clients.

Course Objectives

1. Evaluate compliance issues for HIV/AIDS substance-abusing clients and identify strategies to achieve optimal adherence to treatment.

2. Recognize the challenges of bringing substance abusers with HIV/AIDS into the health care system, and differentiate between various models of integrated care and standards of care for working with this population.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the pharmacologic interventions used to treat these clients, while recognizing how HIV/AIDS medications interact with other drugs.

4. Review the health issues that affect HIV/AIDS substance abuse populations and the strategies used to assist clients with these issues.
