Course Description

This course was designed to give a brief overview of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in various special populations. The information was taken from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and includes a discussion of current research and statistics, risk factors, socioeconomic issues, and prevention strategies among different races/ethnicities, women, older adults, youth, as well as other groups.

Course Objectives

1. Demonstrate an understanding of how the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States affects African Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives, Asians and Pacific Islanders, Hispanics/Latinos, men who have sex with men, women, adults over age 50, and youth.

2. Evaluate the statistics regarding race/ethnicity of persons (including children) diagnosed with HIV/AIDS as well as forms of transmission for these groups as of 2005.

3. Recognize how substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, risky sexual behavior, and social and cultural influences increase the risks for development of HIV infection.

4. Evaluate prevention strategies for minority races and ethnicities and the other special populations that are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic.
