This course is designed to provide information about the myriad issues surrounding substance abusers who are HIV positive. The course will assist substance abuse treatment professionals as they continually update their skills and knowledge as well as reexamine their own attitudes and biases. It will also be helpful to anyone in the medical, mental health, and social work field, as well as others who want to learn more about HIV and AIDS and substance abuse.
Course Objectives
1. Recognize the importance of including formal training within counselors' programs, evaluating personal attitudes, examining fears of infection, and avoiding burnout for those who work with HIV positive substance abusers.
2. Exhibit an understanding of the need for proper screenings for HIV and the appropriate referral services that must be considered once the client has tested positive.
3. Review the many counseling issues specific to HIV/AIDS that providers should be familiar with when treating HIV-infected, substance-abusing clients.
4. Examine the needs of particular ethnic or cultural groups as well as gay men, lesbians, bisexual men and women, transgender individuals, parenting or pregnant women, adolescents, older adults, the homeless, and those in the criminal justice system. Understand that special populations must be understood, respected, and consulted in order to make effective interventions.
5. Review the treatment strategies and different levels of care for HIV positive substance abusers and the various issues involved in counseling terminally ill patients.
