Course Description

This new course offers an up to date look at sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), based on information provided by the Center for Disease Control, Health and Human Services.   It addresses the transmission, signs and symptoms, complications, and treatment of various STDs.  It also covers preventions strategies and ways in which various STDs are linked to one another.   Professionals in any medical, mental health, social work, or education field could benefit from this information, as well as anyone who may be looking to increase their knowledge about this important subject matter.

Course Objectives

1.  Examine the rates of occurrence in the United States of various sexually transmitted diseases, including determining which populations are most vulnerable to which STDs.

2.  Review the methods of transmission for syphilis, gonorrhea, genital HPV and herpes, chlamydia, and others, as well as the signs and symptoms and treatment options for these conditions.

3.  Evaluate the consequences of STDs for pregnant women and their babies, and examine the relationship between STD prevention and treatment and HIV infection.
