This course was developed from information provided by the American Counseling Association (ACA) to give an overview of the professional organization's Code of Ethics. The Code enables the association to clarify to current and future members, and to those served by members, the nature of the ethical responsibilities held in common by those who work in the counseling field. The course provides valuable advice to assist counselors when they are faced with ethical dilemmas that are difficult to resolve, in order to engage in a carefully considered ethical decision-making process.
Course Objectives
1. Define the purposes of theACA Code of Ethics as it assists members in constructing a professional course of action that best serves those utilizing counseling services and best promotes the values of the counseling profession.
2. Evaluate the counselor's role in encouraging client growth and development in ways that promote the formation of healthy relationships, while at the same time creating an ongoing partnership, establishing and upholding appropriate boundaries, and maintaining confidentiality.
3. Summarize the counselor's responsibility to give back to the profession and to develop positive working relationships and systems of communication with colleagues in order to enhance services to clients.
4. Recognize ethical considerations in client evaluation and assessment, in supervising and training others in the profession, and the appropriate steps to resolving ethical dilemmas.
