CEU Course Description

This course describes treatment effectiveness, cost effectiveness, current coverage under each Medicaid program, and examples of innovative financing and delivery models used by states to provide disulfiram, acamprosate, methadone, buprenorphine, buprenorphine-naloxone, and naltrexone to those with alcohol and/or opioid use disorders.

CEU Course Objectives

1.  Enumerate the three drugs with the least coverage across Medicaid programs for the purpose of treating opioid addiction and explain why this is seen.

2.  Investigate what the scientific research has found for the benefits that medications for alcohol and opioid dependence provide to the client and to the rest of society.

3.  Compare and contrast the different medications used for alcohol and opioid dependence and explain how each produces the desired results.

4.  Examine the five controlled substance schedules defined under the Controlled Substances Act.

5.  Identify who may dispense methadone or buprenorphine to a patient under the direction of the OTP medical director who is certified by SAMHSA and registered with the DEA, as long as the activity is consistent with state law.
