This course was compiled using The Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP), Clinical Guidelines for the Use of Buprenorphine in the Treatment of Opioid Addiction, which provides consensus-and evidence-based treatment guidance for the use of buprenorphine, a new option for the treatment of opioid addiction. The rise of heroin is nationwide phenomenon in the United States and all opioid addiction has become a major medical problem and an explosive social issue. Treatment providers in the medical and mental health fields as well as others who want to understand the complexities of opioid addiction and the appropriateness of buprenorphine treatment will benefit from this course.

1. Review opioid addiction in the United States today, including the historical context of the current treatment environment, the scope of the opioid addiction problem, and the various approaches to treatment.
2. Evaluate the pharmacology, screening, assessment, and diagnosis of opioid addiction problems, and review when buprenorphine is an appropriate option for treatment.
3. Explore treatment of opioid addiction with buprenorphine according to established protocols, and recognize when to seek specialty addiction treatment referral or consultation.
