CEU Course Description

This course explores several main elements that influence why people respond differently to trauma; the contextual and systemic dynamics that influence individual and community perceptions of trauma and its impact; types of trauma; objective and subjective characteristics of trauma; and individual and sociocultural features that serve as risk or protective factors.

Course Objectives

1. Differentiate between natural or human-caused trauma, individual, group, community, and mass trauma.

2. Highlight objective and subjective characteristics of traumatic experiences and discuss how they influence the effects of traumatic stress.

3. Identify how social, demographic, environmental, and psychological factors influence a person’s experience of trauma, and his or her resilience in dealing with the short-and long-term consequences.

4. Review case illustrations demonstrating trauma symptoms and reactions, as well as interventions used to assist trauma survivors.
