CE Course Description

This course was based upon the Tobacco Cessation Toolkit for Mental Health Providers developed by the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, Department of Psychiatry. Smoking Cessation is a key component of consumer-driven, individualized treatment planning. Therapists, Social Workers, Nurses and Counselors will all benefit from this toolkit. CE Course Objectives

1.  Summarize the biological, psychological, and social factors that may contribute to tobacco use among persons with mental illness.

2.  Describe the 5A's Model (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange) that is recommended for smoking cessation assessment and intervention.

3.  Discuss the importance of considering cultural issues when working with tobacco users from various racial and ethnic backgrounds.

4.  Evaluate specific treatment options including nicotine replacement therapy and cognitive-behavioral interventions that may assist those with mental illness in quitting smoking.
