Course Description
Management of acute behavioral emergencies and crisis intervention are frequently employed modalities in the ER. The psychiatric ER is also a major site for psychiatry resident training, and guidelines have been put forth for training in emergency psychiatry for residents. The guidelines stress the importance of direct and careful supervision of residents by attending psychiatrists.
Course Objectives
1. Evaluate the “clinical risk management” approach to manage acute behavioral emergencies and crisis intervention in an emergency room.
2. Identify clinical, diagnostic, management, communication, and medico-legal skills needed by professionals working in the psychiatric emergency room.
3. Determine ways in which medical conditions, substance use disorders, and psychiatric symptoms need to be evaluated in the emergency room.
4. Assess the importance of a comprehensive assessment for suicide and violence risk in the ER, while outlining specific steps to reduce risk in these areas.
