PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (National Institute of Mental Health)

Course Description

This short course gives a brief look into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder based on information provided by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  It provides general information on the definition, symptoms, and treatment options for those with the disorder as well as suggestions on where people can go for help.  This course would be useful for students and professionals in the medical, social work, or mental health fields.

Course Objectives

1.  Provide a description of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder including re-experiencing, avoidance, and hyper arousal symptoms.

2.  Evaluate the risk and resilience factors of PTSD and identify how it is detected.

3.  Determine methods of treating PTSD including psychotherapy options and appropriate medications.

4.  Recognize efforts under way to improve the detection and treatment of PTSD and where one can go for help in dealing with the disorder.
