Psychological First Aid - 2nd Edition is an evidence based approach to help children, adolescents, adults, and families in the immediate aftermath of disaster and terrorism, and it is designed to reduce the initial distress caused by traumatic events and to foster short- and long-term adaptive functioning and coping. This course was developed using information from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and the National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and the strategies are intended for use by providers who come in contact with those who have been exposed to disaster or terrorism. This course would be beneficial to anyone who may be looking to increase their knowledge in this area.
Course Objectives
1. Evaluate the strengths, basic objectives, and the delivery of Psychological First Aid, including when and for whom the interventions would be appropriate.
2. Review the methods used to contact and engagedisaster survivors, enhance immediate and ongoing safety, to provide physical and emotional comfort, and to offer practical help to survivors.
3. Examine ways to help establish brief or ongoing contacts with primary support persons or other sources of support, including family members, friends, and community helping resources, and determine methods to link survivors with available collaborative services needed at the time or in the future.
4. Identify common psychological reactions to traumatic experiences and losses, particularly the differences in how children, adolescents, adults, and older adults react and cope
