The Addiction Counseling Competencies: The Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes of Professional Practice (Technical Assistance Publication [TAP] 21), developed by the National Curriculum Committee of the Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) Network, is an evidence based body of work that identifies competencies that are essential to the effective practice of counseling for psychoactive substance use disorders.
The participant will find a useful overview of each competency, as well as exercises, case studies, instruments and additional resources that will bring the competencies to life and make the TAP 21 accessible in one simple workbook.
CE Course Objectives
1. Evaluate the competencies that are essential for substance abuse counselors while recognizing the need to continually analyze current research and best practices.
2. Distinguish between the four sets of competencies that underlie the work of addiction professionals including understanding addiction, treatment knowledge, application to practice, and professional readiness.
3. Identify the eight practice dimensions that are appropriate for addictions counselors, while discussing how the development of expertise in each area leads to counselor effectiveness.
4. Review various exercises, case studies, and assessment resources that will assist in the effective practice of counseling for psychoactive substance use disorders.
