This is another excellent course using material developed from the Treatment Improvement Protocol, Substance Abuse Treatment and Family Therapy, developed by the US Department of Health and Human Services Center for Substance Abuse Treatment The material was designed for use by substance abuse treatment counselors as well as family therapists. The course will provide an understanding of the importance of family involved techniques in substance abuse treatment and will give therapists from both fields pertinent information that can be incorporated into their work. Also included is a valuable appendix which includes guidelines for assessing violence and screening for child abuse. 

Course Objectives 

1. Identify primary concepts from the substance abuse treatment field and review the evolution of the field of family therapy while examining various models of family therapy. 

2. Explore the impact of substance abuse on families including understanding social issues that coexist with families and identifying ways to address these issues. 

3. Recognize specific approaches to therapy in substance abuse treatment and family therapy includingtheory, treatment modalities, and the role of 12-step programs in substance abuse treatment. 

4. Evaluate integrated models for substance abuse treatment and family therapy while exploringconjoint treatment approaches. 

5. Exhibit an understanding of substance abuse treatment for various populations and the applications to family therapy for each population. 

6. Show a knowledge of the importance of improving services for families and identify policy implications for effectively joining family therapy and substance abuse treatment.
