Course Description

This course was developed using the book, A Multidisciplinary Handbook of Child and Adolescent Mental Health for Front-line Professionals, to provide an accessible introduction to child and mental health, covering the nature, prevalence, treatment and management of mental health problems in children and young people. The material explores issues such as assessing and meeting the needs of young people, legal aspects of working with child mental health, as well as material on culture and diversity and an update on current medication.

The course is appropriate for students, trainers, and professionals working with young people with mental health problems in a medical and non-medical environment. It also includes pertinent case studies that demonstrate the issues facing children with mental health issues and strategies for the professionals who work with them.

Course Objectives

1. Recognize the factors that influence the mental health of young people, including child and family development, and the ways in which young people’s mental health is assessed.

2. Evaluate the emotional and behavioral problems that affect mental health in children as well as the neuro-developmental and specific mental health disorders.

3. Identify treatment and management strategies used in primary care settings and in specialist treatment environments.

4. Exhibit an understanding of legal aspects relevant to the mental health of young people including the rights of children and caregivers.

5. Review case studies relevant to children's mental health issues including practical strategies for the professional working with these populations.
